I own an old home (200+ years) and it has been added on to over the years. The roof line and pitch varies. it has single which I hope I do not have to remove.
What do I need to know to be smart enough to select the best material and style as well as the installation process. Is it smart to obtain the materials myself and then find a contractor I trust?

I think the first step is to understand the variety of products that is available, and the differences between products. Then you can choose the product which you feel is right for you and your home and then find out who in your area is familiar and experienced with installing it properly.
