I have been advised that a roof with a pitch of 8/12 or greater is too steep for a metal roof and the water run-off has such a speed that in a heavy rain the water pressure will tear the gutters off the house. Is this true?

In a word, "no," that isn't true. Metal roofs of all types are used on steep pitch roofs on a regular basis. Metal is chosen for the distinctive beauty it gives to steep roofs and also for the fact that labor to install roofing on steep roofs is significant, regardless of what product is chosen. Therefore, a "do it once, do it right with metal roofing" mentality is beneficial on steep roofs. My own house, with a metal roof of course, is a 12:12 pitch and everything is just fine. I do suggest hanging gutters as high as possible so that water does not over-shoot them. When installing a metal roof that has considerable formed thickness to is (such as a shake or tile profile), using 6" gutters would work better than 5", again to keep water from overshooting them.
