Barbara,
The type of roof panel you have is generically called an "R" Panel.
Those large hip and ridge covers appear to have been made on the jobsite by the installer. They do not appear to be factory-made caps which generally would have a more "tailored" look.
If the hips and ridges are not properly flashed, then a large cap like this can be beneficial. However, if things are handled properly, you do not need caps quite this large.
Obviously, this look bothers you so you will want to talk to your contractor about it. The problem now though is the screws they have put through the panels when fastening these large caps. Switching to smaller caps will involve a lot of work.
You may also wnat to contact the roofing manufacturer.

how about the large size in valleys.. I have looked at homes and business and all on internet with NOTHING looking as wide as mine isnt' there a standard spacing recommendation?? I did call the supplier who choose not to get involved~ I am at a point to an attorney general and a JAG since my roof is left open on top.. caps not around pipes.. bad cuts with openings all over .. the man keeps saying he will show and does not.. Husband being in Iraq makes it tough.. and yes the Large Caps make it look hidious
thanks

I actually cannot see the valley pan width in the picture very well but it does not look all that unusual to me. You want enough valley width that water does not wash up from one side to the other.
I am sorry about the situation you're in.
You mentioned the supplier does not wnat to be involved ... not sure if you are referring to the manufacturer or a distributor.
Whether they like it or not, the manufacturer in my opinion holds an ethical obligation to provide some guidance on this situation. They know how their products are meant to be installed and they should be providing that information and working with the contractor to impart guidance to them.
It sounds like the contractor is not being very helpful and you have lost confidence in them. Track down the manufacturer, find out who the President of the company is, and inists on talking to them. Insist that they get involved and help get things straightened out.
Good luck. Hang in there. Thank you for what you and your husband are doing for our country.

That valley almost looks pre-used. There should be some sort of closure on the panel ends.
The hip should have an extra flashing beneath the panels in my opinion.
I would insist that Patten's get involved if I were you. They have an ethical responsibility in my opinion. I believe they are based out of Hattiesburg. Please call and talk to their president.

Well I talked to an owner hard to describe the HUGE hips I have on a small roof.. but he did state the valleys should be 3.5 from the point to the edge max... mine are close to 5 so they are way off.. perhaps I will drive the 100 miles to bring him pictures.. my roofer refuses to answer and I guess attorney general and the JAG

Good luck. It sounds like you know what options you have available to you. You could also just have your own personal attorney contact the contractor and the manufacturer.
