I talked with a metal roofer today (20 years roofing with metal) who feels that the SSR (silicone?) paint is a better choice over the Kynar as the SSR has been around longer. He also said that the fine print on the Kynar does not really guarentee the paint after 10 years.... What are your thoughts? Christy

There is no one knowledgable in paints and metal building products who will tell you that the Kynar / Hylar finishes are not top of the line. As far as the warranty ... that will vary a bit from producer to producer but, there again, hands down, the Kynar / Hylar warranties are stronger than everything else out there. Todd Miller

What exactly provides the Kynar/Hylar finish to outperform a standard SMP finish. I would think that the molecular structure is superior but what can you tell me outside of the fact that Kynar/Hylar finishes generally have longer warranty periods.

Paints are made up of three things -- Resin (what holds it together and makes it stick to the substrate when dry), Solids (pigments), and Solvent (what makes it "wet"). The solvent is gone once the paint is dry. You then have Resin and Solids. In the Kynar paints, the Resin is based on the mineral fluoride ... it provided a very tight molecular bond which holds the pigment in place and holds the paint to the substrate (with a quality primer in between). The Solids in Kynars are only ceramic pigments. Ceramic pigments hold color better than other pigments do. Todd Miller
