I read somewhere that I can get a tax credit for certain types of metal roofs. Is that true? What are the requirements? What types of roofs qualify? Lawrence Lokken

This does not kick in until 2006 and it is still a little unclear as to exactly how much the credit will be. But, yes, the new energy bill does include a credit for purchases of residential metal roofing which includes a special infra-red-reflective coating.

Many manufacturers are offering at least some colors with reflective coatings. Names such as Ultra Cool, Cool Colors, and Hi-R are being used. Use this site to find some products you like and then inquire as to their availability with reflective finishes.

I have spoken w/my insurance agent and she stated that I can get a 24% break on my home owners policy if I have a class 4 metal roof installed. I am getting conflicting feedback from some contractors giving me bids. The contractor w/the highest bid stated that he used 24 gauge metal and that it would be considered a class 4 roof. Another contractor stated that he uses 26 gauge. What constitutes a class 4 roof, and is the heavier gauge metal allways better?

Products are tested or approved on their individual merit. Gauge can have a bearing on whether a product passes but it certainly is not the only issue. The only way to know if a product has the 2218 Class IV rating is to contact the manufacturer. Also, the Texas Dept of Insurance has a website listing various "approved" products.
