I want to put a metal roof on a home in the Florida Keys. Pitch is 3:12 and there is no attic space (vaulted ceilings). I'm considering removing the existing shingles, applying a self adhering water sealing membrane, then 1-1/2" tall stripping with foam insulation between the stripping and then the metal on top of that. The metal I'm considering is a 1-1/2" tall corregation (called IC72 by one manuafcturer) in 24 gauge and designed for use with spans. Wind rating must be 150 mph. I want to use one inch thick foam and use a sealing system on the edges that allows for breathing and a ridge vent (to avoid condensation). The color would be white and be the PVDF coating system. Any comments or suggestions would be very apprciated. Thanks.

Tom, you live in a beautiful area! You have done your homework and I really do not have much at all to add. Make sure that you follow the manufacturers' instructions as far as installation. You might want to consider using stainless screws as fasteners rather than standard steel -- they are stronger and, of course, corrosion resistant. If you do not want a white roof, I will add that there are some systems now available with infrared reflective coatingswhich reflect radiant heat even in dark colors. Other than that, make sure that the base metal is either G90 galvanized, AZ 50 or AZ 55 galvalume, or aluminum at least .032" in thickness. Great work on your research and analysis! Todd Miller

Tom, It sure sounds like you have done your research on standing seam stle of metal roofing. Did you know there is another option that has passed the Monroe county requirements? It looks like cedar shake. Not sure the style of your home, but I thought I would let you know. It have the Florida Energy Star for allowing 34% less heat gain into your home with out all the additional steps you are talking about. Roxanne

Tom, It sounds like you have a good plan if you are planning to put a standing seam product on your roof. I wanted to let you know that there is another product that passes the Monroe county requirements that looks like hand cut cedar shake. It also has the Florida Engery Star savings with out all those extra steps. It allows 34% less heat transferred into your home. Thought you might want to know. Not sure about style of your house...what kind would look best and still provide you with the protection and energy savings you seem to be looking for. Roxanne
