I'm having a new home built with cathedral ceiling thoughout, i.e no attic.
The builder and I are debating the need for soffits, versus a roof with no ventilation
installed on a type of foam.
I'm thinking ventalition would always be
a good thing. They believe it may make the house hotter.
Any general suggestions?
Thanks

Well no matter if you are in Canada or the USA the building codes all now call for ventilation in all sloped roofs. In a vaulted ceiling it is 1.5" in Canada and 1" in the US of free air with intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge. This must be provide between the insulation and roof covering. The roof assembly also is required to have an interior air barrier such as 10 mil poly with selaed joints and openings and then a moisture barrier under the roof covering such as felt. This will help cool the house and elliminate ice daming. Also consider an energy star rated roof system.

Each product has differant requirements to meet the manufacturers requirements and the building code so one really needs 3to choose a product and then contact the manufacturer and ask about their product approval report which dictates how to put it on according to the code.
Appreciate that certain areas have differant wind, snow, fire earthquake, hail etc requirements that must be met in conjunction with the ventilation. Your local building inspector should be a good resource to ask.
