My wife and I are going to build a new home in Texas and we are wanting to use metal roofing,"R" panel or standing seam most likely. If I understand the process right,on the rafters we need to deck it just like with asphalt shingles then lay down 30lb roofing felt, then scew the roof to that. A "old timer" said we don't have to deck it,we should 1x4 lath it and screw the panel to that, but I think that will cause condesation to fall on the insulation in the attic,,I don't want ANY problems,,so your help wold be MUCH appriciated...Tommy

With proper vapor barrier behind your ceilings and good attic ventilation, the old timer's idea could work. It is not my preferred method though.
Always make sure that the product is being installed in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions.

Lath works fine except in high wind zone areas. If you are in a hurricane prone area you might want to invest in 3/4 inch plywood for the extra strength. Most blow-offs are a failure of the substrate.

I want to stress, though, that not all metal roofs are engineered and tested for installation over lathe. Additionally, even with some products that can be installed over lathge, their manufacturers will suggest solid decking for residential applications.
