I have a 5V Crimp metal roof. For ventilation we basically only have a standard ridge cap with a strip of mesh under the cap. We have soffit vents and the contractor left a gap in the roof deck at the ridge. The contractor (7 yrs ago) said there was no offical ridge vents for the 5V crimp. How can I find a real ridge vent for a 5V crimp roof? I have not had any problems with the current cap but I don't believe I'm getting any real ventilation.
Thanks for your help.

I have a problem believing my ridge vent is working. The mesh is a fiberglass so thick and compressed that I do not see heat escaping on a hot day. The house is one year old and I was thinking of spraying colored smoke from inside and seeing if it escaped with an outside observer. The roof is a 6 in 12 so my question is where do I get compressed colored smoke or maybe you have some better ideas?
Oh, the mesh is so thick that no light comes in. Thanks Guy's!

I would suspect that if it is a manufactered ridge vent it is fine. While it typically looks more ridgid and strandy than house insulation it is designed that wayto keep the bugs and the snow out and be weather resistant. Generally you will not see the heat as it is a passive system and vents ongoingly so the air coming out is not that much hotter.

Allan,
The vent is a site built stuffing of fiberglass mesh. The mesh is so thick and compressed that I remember asking the roofer if any air could escape. He said that you do not want wind driven rain to come in and I remember that it was much thicker than a furnace filter. My neighbors gable vents pour hot air out and I see nothing on my roof.
It is a 6 in 12 forest green and I want to prove it is working. My outside air is 95 in the summer outside of Yosemite National Park.
Any other suggestions are appreciated !

If the ridge vent is exhausting air, you should be able to reach up to it from inside the attic with a light piece of paper or tissue or tape and the sirflow going out the ridge should be enough to move (or "pull") the paper or tape.

One more thing for your good advice. If anyone wants to put solar on a standing seam roof, there is now a system that fastens to the standing part of the roof so the roof can remain leakfree. Preety cool!

Hey Todd,
My server would not let me go to that site. What I have is a U shaped flashing that the standing seam panels go in at the top. A 2" cut in the roof with 1/2 " fiberglass mesh over the cut. Then a ridge cap on the U shape channel. The guy's must have been........ Anyway I guess there should be a standoff to hold the ridgecap up and the mesh should be wide enough to be at the edge of the v shaped ridge cap.
In my install the ridge cap is laying on the U channel and the mesh is inside on the 2 inch cut. It does keep the rain out............

You need to have some sort of special ridge vent. It sounds to me like you pretty much have a typical ridge cap detail but no way for air to get out.
Both Coravent and Profilevent have some pictures on their websites of vented ridge details which I think could be used to replace your current ridge cap and fiberglass.
