I HAVE A VERY OLD ASPHALT ROOF WITH A 4/12
PITCH, I KNOW IF I PUT A NEW ASPHALT ROOF ON I WILL NEED TO RESHEET MOST OF THE ROOF.
BUT IF I GO WITH A STANDING SEAM METAL ROOF , DO I NEED TO RESHEET OR CAN I PUT UP 2X4 STRINGERS AFTER I TEAR OFF THE OLD . I FIGURED THAT THE COST OF 2X4'S VS. OSB WOULD HELP OFFSET THE HIGHER COST OF A METAL ROOF?

There are some standing seam roofs which can be installed in this way. But not all. It depends upon the product design, metal type and thickness, and how the product has been tested.
Also, if you do this, make sure the manufacturer is "okay" with this type of installation for a residence. Proper air barrier, insulation, and attic ventilation will be critical.
Find a product that you like and then work with the manufacturer to look at the available options.
