My wife and I are in the process of developing a plan for a house in a coastal area of south-east Florida. The style of the house will be a Coastal/Key West style house with a standing seam metal roof. Could someone point me to some reference material that I can use to specify an aesthetically pleasing, quality product, and properly installed metal roof system? Energy efficiency and sound proofing are concerns for us. Any recommendations or ideas that you can lend us would be greatly appreciated.

Scott, really the MRA website (www.metalroofing.com) is a great resource. I suggest using it to link to manufacturers of products you like and then contacting those manufacturers and asking them your design questions.
Unfortunately, there's no "consumer reports" out there for metal roofing.
There are a few websites you might look at. www.roofingpeople.com has some info on metal roofs. Also, the Florida Solar Energy Center and OakRidge National Laboratory websites have some info on energy studies of roofing.
Individual metal roofing manufacturers will be glad to share their own test data and information pertaining to the efficiency of their roof systems.
All Best!

My wife and I are building oceanfront in Florida. Today, a saleman told us that his company would not warrant the metal roof for corrosion or paint finish within 1000 feet of the ocean. This was corroborated by calling the manufacturer and speaking to a technical support person. What advice can you give for oceanfront? Is this a general problem with building oceanfront? Can you recommend a source to find a company that will warrant a metal roof under these circumstances? Thank you so much.
Best regards,
Rich Hardin, MD.

This will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from product to product. In some cases, there will be a coastal exclusion; in other cases there won't be. If there isn't one, be sure to check and see what all is covered. Obviously, corrosion / rust is a higher risk in a salt environment. In some cases, the product warranty may be valid for coastal applications but may not cover rust. You also ought to consider products which cannot rust such as aluminum, copper, or stainless.
