I just built a new home and had a metal roof installed. The problem I am having is that the Dormers are leaking inside the house when it is a hard blowing rain. I have contacted the installer and he has checked it and could not find anything. I believe it is coming in at the ridge cap. This is where it is vented and there is no closures there. The pitch is a 12/12 meeting a 10/12. Any suggestions?

Feel free to send me a picture of the ridge detail if you wish, [email protected]
No specific ideas other than the obvious -- ridge, valleys & sidewall flashings.
Can you send information to the manufacturer of the roofing and get their input?
Also, do not rule out the possibility that this is actually related to the walls or windows. Those items can leak as well, especially when hit with wind-driven rain!
Is there a good underlayment in place beneath the metal?

I have a 8 inch stove pipe going out my 12/12 roof. The last rain we had it leaked. I found out that it was because the caulking they used had cracked. This house is only 4 months old. The flashing was made by a sheet metal company. I think it should have been souldered. What do you recommend the correct flashing to go around 8 inch pipe on a 12/12.

First of all, the underlayment beneath the roofing should have been brought up around and taped to or sealed to the stove pipe. (I am assuming this is an unsulated pipe.)
The pipe should have come with some sort of self-flashing kit which coulkd then be used then the roof was installed. There are also flashings available such as "metalbestos" flashings and also flexible collar flashings. These are usually available from any roofing or even plumbing suppy distributors.
Finally, though, my #1 suggestion, as always, is to get exact details for this from the roofing manufacturer.
Any roofing manufacturer who cannot provide such details is not really serious about the residential market and you should find someone else.

I forgot to mention that my 12/12 roof is a metal roof. We had to customize a flashing to fit the ribs on the metal. I could not find anyone in our area that had one. The place I bought the stove didn't even offer one. I tryed to use a rubber flashing rated for 300 degrees which would have been perfect, but it would not fit right on such a steep roof.

I am having the same problem with my metal roof -leaking dormers during a steady rain. I think I have found the root of the problem by taking a water hose to it. It is coming from a cut in the metal put there by mistake. My question is what is a good sealant to put there to correct the problem?

Thst unfortunately is not the best solution. If accessible use a butyl tape and then apply a metal patch over with stitch screws through the tape sealant.
In other areas use a good butyl base caulking that comes with at least a 20 yr warranty.
