OK, I have been a contractor for 20 years and want to put my first metal roof up (on my OWN home).
I need to know EVERYTHING about installing those long metal sheets of colored metal. I will be removing my old shingles (two layers, bottom layer is asbestos I'm told).
I have a HUGE place, and some of the slopes run down to flat roofs that i will rubber roof. (I need rubber roof installation info too)
I need to know about:
underlayment (weather guard, and 30 lb tar paper)
purlins (what is the pattern of them? how thick?)
roof repair (for rotten wood)
drip edges?
how to cut the diagonals for fitting the metal to my valleys?
can i do part of my roof at a time?
will prices come down any time soon?
fasteners? (I'm installing on 1 x 10 decking)
my roof is high, is the alum-a-pole product a good suggestion? (I may purchase it)
do you recommend knee pads? power nailers? screw guns?
is there an affordable text i should read first?
is there a phone number I can call to ask specific questions?
thanks, Tim

Tim,
I am thrilled you're doing this! Welcome to the world of metal roofing.
I am sorry but I really cannot help much with your questions. The answers all depend upon exactly what type of metal roof you choose. Once you find a product you like, the manufacturer can provide all of your answers.
Some products can be installed over purlins and others require decking. Generally, for residential applications, solid decking is usually preferable.
Cutting is usually done with tin snips, power shears, or a guillotine. Steel products should not be cut with a saw or abrasive wheel.
All of your fastening and other questions would have to be answered by the manufacturer of the product you choose. We all produce different products with different attributes and requirements.
