(Belfair, WA) -- In these tough economic times, every penny counts. By installing a new metal roof, consumers can reduce their tax burden, cut energy costs, help the environment and protect their biggest investment – their home.
As a result of the Stimulus Package signed in February 2009, homeowners who make energy efficient updates to their home, including the installation of a painted or coated Energy Star® labeled metal roof, may be eligible for a tax credit worth 30% of the material costs, up to $1500 per home. To qualify, the metal roof must be installed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. Therefore, the timing couldn’t be better to choose a durable, eco-friendly metal roof.

Which Metal Roofs Qualify for the Tax Credit?
An Energy Star-labeled metal roofing system has at least 65% solar reflectance for low-slope roofing and 25% solar reflectance for steep-slope roofing. Many products made by the manufacturer members of the Metal Roofing Alliance qualify for the credit.
“What’s great about this news is that a $1,500 tax credit is truly an extra $1,500 in your wallet,” said Tom Black, Executive Director of the Metal Roofing Alliance. “Tax credits are subtracted directly from a consumer’s total tax liability. Therefore, a credit has a higher value than a deduction. For example, if a homeowner is in the marginal 25% tax bracket and earns a $1,500 credit on his new, energy-efficient metal roof, the result is equal to a tax deduction of approximately $6,000.”

Why Choose a Metal Roof?
The majority of homeowners who choose traditional asphalt shingle roofs don’t think about their environmental impact. Many consumers are surprised to learn that their asphalt shingle roof is a petroleum product that further increases dependency on fossil fuels. The typical asphalt shingle roof has to be replaced approximately every 20 years, making it a short-term solution with a long-term environmental impact. According to the National Association of Homebuilders, asphalt shingles contribute 1.36 billion pounds of waste to landfills every year.
A better option is a sustainable metal roof that features significant recycled content. Metal roofs often outlast the home they’re on, require no maintenance and are 100% recyclable at the end of their useful life. As an added bonus for re-roofing projects, metal roofing can often be applied over the original roof, saving removal and disposal costs and reducing landfill waste.
Metal roofing is also on the leading edge of technology with a wide variety of finishes, designs and colors that provide greater energy savings compared to most other non-metal roofing products on the market today. Metal roofs resist cracking, shrinking and eroding and stand up to hail, high winds and wildfires.
“Consumers are making informed environmental choices in everything from the car they drive to the clothes they wear. The roof they choose should also be evaluated for its sustainability,” said Black. “A metal roof is a long term solution that increases the value of your home while reducing its environmental impact.”
