Ted Crawford of Tampa, Florida never thought he'd buy a metal roof -- until two trees fell on his house in the 2004 hurricanes.
"When I got the storm damage," Crawford told the Tampa Tribune, "I decided I was going to get the best. Besides, a friend of mine had one and I liked the way it looked. I'm tired of replacing my roof every 10 years."
Hurricanes have made national headlines this year and in 2004. Last year alone, they damaged one out of every five homes in Florida.
Yet, even if you don't live in Florida, nearly 75% of all U.S. homes are in areas that experience severe weather -- hail, earthquakes, flooding, or hurricanes -- according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
No matter where you live, metal roofing is the most durable choice in extreme weather. That's one reason twice as many homeowners have chosen metal over other roofing materials, like asphalt shingle, in the last 5 years.
You see, an asphalt roof starts to deteriorate as soon as it goes on. Normal weather -- snow, rain, and the sun's ultraviolet rays -- mean you'll likely have to re-roof every 5 to 15 years.
Throw in some extreme weather, and you may have to re-roof sooner than you think.
A metal roof, on the other hand, can withstand decades of abuse from extreme weather conditions such as hail, wildfires, and winds up to 140 mph. The MRA's Todd Miller explains: "Metal roofing materials interlock, forming a protective barrier that other roofing materials do not provide. This interlocking makes the roof stronger and more resistant to high winds."
The fact is, a durable, investment-grade metal roof will likely be the last roof you ever buy. It stands up to the worst weather you can think of, no matter where you live... and stays looking great for decades.
TALK TO AN MRA CONTRACTOR FOR MORE INFORMATION
If you're thinking of putting a new metal roof on your home this summer, talk to your local MRA Member Contractor. That's what Deborah Lauren of Minnesota did...
"My husband and I have just had a new metal roof installed on our house in the Twin Cities area," Deborah tells us. "I used the Metal Roofing Alliance website to look for information about metal roofs and to link to various manufacturers' sites. We used a contractor who was listed on your web site. We are very happy with the look of the roof and our MRA contractor did a great job. It is a pleasure to know that the new roof will last long after we have left this house. Thanks for making such good information available."
The Metal Roofing Alliance is a consortium of metal roofing manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and contractors with the main goal of educating consumers about the many benefits of metal roofing.
